My urge to bake my first apple pie blossomed after a brisk long walk in the dark with P. I can here the gathering of questions shuffling in everyone’s brains. Walking in the dark? .. Well, P and I have decided to dedicate our Tuesday nights to long walks as a means of exercise. I’m sure you’re all thinking, these once a week walks are not going to counterbalance the vast amount of food we eat. But, hey its a start isn’t it?. With that explanation out of the way. Why are we in the dark? its because I was late. And i am to most things that P and T organise. I’m sorry guys, please forgive me?
I really need to get my time managed and get out of the house in time because it gets dark real quick in Sydney these days. And darkness means coldness. This was the reason that Roasts and pies were summoned in my mind.
Like most visual people, my life is colour coded, smell coded, music coded and Food coded. Like a library, each memory, a book has been stored neatly in place. (unlike my desk at the moment) At the beat of a song, a taste of a food and a specific smell would evoke the neurological chemicals in my brain to recall forgotten and fond childhood memories.
A perfect example would be my 1 yr living in Canberra at the age of 5. The smell of Eucalyptus trees, the song kokomo by the beach boys, catching Christmas beetles and grasshoppers, howling winds at night and the black caterpillars that gather together and fall from trees, these are just a few things that come to mind. My colour for Canberra is Yellow. I’m not sure why its yellow to me. but that’s how i see it.
Although Rhubarb is unfamiliar territory for me in the kitchen, my likings of rhubarb pie came from breakfast at cafe in crows nest.( i need to find out the name of this cafe). Bf S took me to this cute lil cafe which served brekkie all day. Being shift workers, this meant we were late risers and often ate breakfast at 11 or midday. At this cafe i ordered my first rhubarb pie and ohhh it was delicious, but i never thought of making it til now.
To me, dessert pies are comfort food, winter food and made with love. Rustic and hearty. So on this cold night i introduced P and T to their first Rhubarb and Apple pie. The process was quick and i found it quite easy. reviews? lets wait for their comments. but i think i can safely say that they’ve fallen for it too. Hopefully, I’ve created a new book in their library of memories which they will take out when we have future dinner parties and in the distant future instill in our families xxx
